What If I Have a Refrigerant Leak?

To keep your vehicle’s cabin cool, it utilizes an AC system to suck in hot and humid air and condition it, so it is nice and cool. This system is comprised of three major components: an evaporator, a condenser, and a compressor, as well as several other components. What the AC uses to keep you cool is a colorless and mostly odorless chemical refrigerant that circulates throughout the AC system. When it moves through the AC system, it cycles between gaseous and liquid states which permits the refrigerant to pull heat out of the evaporator in the cabin. From there it flows to the condenser beneath the hood where a cooling fan cools the air and then pushes the cooler air into the cabin.

Refrigerant is the key part of this process. If a leak develops due to mechanical breakdowns in the system, if cracks or holes develop, or if seals degrade, the refrigerant can leak out of the system and not do its job. Spotting refrigerant leaks is not easy to do, but recognizing symptoms will help you know what is going on. Some things to look for include:

  • Clicks when you run the AC: This clicking sound can indicate a short cycle in your AC system. This usually stems from your compressor’s normal cycle being interrupted and cut short. It may sound like a loud switch turning on and off in repeat succession. It’s more noticeable if you are standing outside of your vehicle while the engine and the AC are on.
  • Dashboard alerts: Not all vehicles can spell out that you have a problem with your AC. Sometimes it shows up as a check engine light or a light that you can’t identify on your dash. It’s best to consult the section about dashboard lights in your manual to see what the indicator light means.
  • Vents are blowing hot: This is probably the most obvious sign of AC trouble. If your climate control system is set at its lowest setting, yet the vent is pushing out hot air, this is probably an indication that you are having AC issues.
